Sonnet the Hedgehog

Long sleepless nights and brighter days wasted

My head and my heart shall not work as one

The bitterest pill that man has tasted

As eyes are blinded by low winter sun

A glass filled with colour won’t ease the pain

It just asks the questions of how and why

Of hands once clasped and moistened by the rain

Before light explodes along deep blue skies

I walk along paths with an unsure stride

And bridges twinned in the water below

Weighed down with rocks and a feeling of pride

All leading to a place I dare not go

Where love resides as a shelter from pain

Where all there is is the wind and the rain
